The Incredible Journey Sheila Burnford Carl Burger Books
Enjoyed by the entire family as a read aloud if you enjoy books that use wonderful and detailed descriptions with no dumbing down for children then this book is for you! The season is the Fall, the area is Ontario, Canada. Meet John Longridge, a writer, who has been animal sitting for the last 8 months for a professor friend of his who had to go overseas on an assignment. The three animals in his care are:>Tao, a Siamese cat
>Bodger, an old, white English Bull Terrier
>Luath, a young Labrador Retriever
John is heading to his brother's cabin a couple hundred miles away. Leaving a note as well as talking with his housekeeper Mrs. Oakes, all is arranged for her to look after the animals until he returns. Unfortunately Tao knocks the paperweight in the night dislodging the second sheet of paper which ends up in the fire. The next morning, Luath takes the initiative to head home to his master. Will the others follow? Mrs. Oakes believes that the animals have gone with John so no one is worried about them.
Heading west, Tao is able to catch his own food. Bodger is too old and weakness soon occurs. What will happen? Luath has been bred to only retrieve and not harm. Will the hunger finally take over? This is truly a story of an INCREDIBLE JOURNEY! Unlike some books where the author has the animals talking there is none of that in this book. We see the relationship/bond the three have between them but that is it. This book is 11 chapters and the animals truly face some very difficult dangers along with the odd unexpected kindness here and there.
FANTASTIC! Highly recommend. Our 13, 10 and 7 year old loved it as did I. I purchased this book for my Kindle. I was not required to write a review but chose to do so. Thanks, Liz

The Incredible Journey Sheila Burnford Carl Burger Books Reviews
This was a beautiful book. I bought it for my 10 year old grandson for one of his novels in homeschool. We thoroughly enjoyed reading the book, and we also watched the movie on prime. We were thrilled how close the movie mirrored the book. The actions of the animals were outstanding. I highly recommend the book and the movie.
This review is by Cora Busick, age 10, edited by Mom.
This book was about two dogs and a cat. They went out of their house and went on a journey by themselves. The terrier got injured by a bear. The cat was trying to cross a stream and fell in. He accidentally went downstream where the dogs couldn't find him. At the end they found each other again. They also found their owners.
I liked this book because the dogs and the cat got back to their owners again at the end. I liked reading about their adventures.
I've lost count of the number of times I've read this book over approximately 40 years. It's a beautiful story told in rich language and offers a small window of comfort when life gets tough or on a chilly night when the fall leaves rattle in the breeze. I applaud the author and offer my gratitude.
I got this book as a read aloud for my class, thinking it would be an exciting story with animal protagonists. I also was hoping that it would be engaging, as the Disney retelling is or in the same vein as Gary Paulsen's "Hatchet". Although there are some exciting parts, overall the book is a little slow and pretty dated. Not a great read aloud candidate.
A touching story of three animal friends, surviving together in the wilderness while trying to find their way back to their loving family. A sassy Siamese cat has great hunting skills and defensive instincts over her two canine companions; an old bull terrier and young labrador. They each bring a much needed skill to traveling alone and fending for themselves. Without reveling to much of the story line, they have adventures and scary moments so well written you want to jump in and help them! When they meet the Ojibway, it's the first of many helpful events. This is an excellent read for young and young at heart.
Here I am, waiting on laundry to be complete, crying at the ending of a wonderful book, just like I did so many years ago as a child. To those who recall, in the 1960's, at least annually the teacher would pass out a small pamphlet with a list of books for their students to read outside of school. This book was an early favorite of mine, given I grew up with any pets and a Siamese in particular.
Because you wife and I have a new kitten - a Siamese kitten- we were struggling for a name and came across Tao on an online list. Immediately I downloaded this book to my kindle app and promptly read it again. Frankly, I was surprised how well I remembered the book's details, and how happy and magical it made/makes me feel!
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves cats and dogs, as a primer for the James Herriot books.
I read this book as a girl in the early-70s, and was in love with the story. Jump ahead 40 years and I am enjoying helping my kids do reports on the book after they read it. It tells the story of a cat and two dogs who journey hundreds of miles to find their human family. On the way they face all kinds of adventures and dangers, and learn that together they are stronger than each of them is alone. They motivate each other to continue on the hard journey, protect and care of each other, and by the end of the journey they are totally bonded.
This book was also made into a Disney movie which I enjoyed as a kid, but as always the book is better than the movie. I love seeing classic books from my childhood still being read and enjoyed by children today. The stories are timeless and teach lessons about love, devotion, honesty and bravery.
Some other books like this one that your older child (8-12 yrs) might enjoy are Island of the Blue Dolphins, My Side Of The Mountain, Where the Red Fern Grows, Shiloh, Charlotte's Web, Hatchet, Because Of Winn Dixie, Gentle Ben, Julie Of The Wolves, Incident At Hawk's Hill, The Yearling, Black Beauty, The Call Of The Wild, Wind In The Willows, and Bambi.
