I loved this book. It was dense with great, complex characters and awesome plot twists. It kept me up very late at night turning pages. It was an absolute pleasure to read. Emily Kenyon is a tough small town Sheriff's detective and single mother of a teenage girl. When she is called upon to investigate the murder of an entire family at a nearby farmhouse, she discovers that their adopted teenage son is missing. He becomes the prime suspect. Before Emily can get a handle on what went down at the farmhouse which was subsequently destroyed by a tornado, her daughter Jenna is on the run with the missing teenage murder suspect. As Emily's investigation and desperate search for her daughter intensifies, she uncovers a twisted web of lies and past murders, at the center of which is a ruthless serial killer. What I loved about this novel is that it is well-written and the deftly handled plot twists are plenty. Olsen is a master at fleshing out various characters' psychology and motivations. He writes women incredibly well--from the embittered, haunted but compassionate and likeable Kenyon to the serial killer groupies, Bonnie and Tina who show up later in the book. His use of the flashback is incredible and I loved how everything came together in the end. Olsen puts a new, brilliant and clever twist on the murder-suicide story. Things are not at all what they seem. As a long time crime thriller reader, I found this novel to be incredibly satisfying and I can't wait to read the rest of Olsen's fiction.

First book I ever read by this author. I enjoyed it so much I read another by him.
This was my first Gregg Olsen novel and I was mesmerized from the beginning with his realistic characters and the complicated and twisted plot! I can't wait to read the next book in this series, Heart of Ice. AND then I'm going to read his other series that starts with Wicked Snow! My new favorite author!
I've enjoyed reading t w o of the emily kenyon books and look forward to more.love the characters!
A family in a small Washington town is found slain. One son is murdered the other is missing. Emily, the detective on the case, becomes deeply involved in the gruesome case when her teenage daughter takes off to be with the boy accused of murder. The plot goes back years to a scandal where an adoption service was placing "too many" babies in wealthy homes. The story is fast-paced, but tends to take an unbelievable turn toward the end.
I read for enjoyment and as long as the story line grabs me, I don't spend a great deal of time analyzing it. This one definitely grabbed me and held me until the end. However when I spend $7.99 for a book, I expect it to be edited! I expect it to be professional. I would think that the author should be ashamed to charge for something he didn't bother to have edited. Did he even proofread it? Doesn't seem that he did. Very disappointed. This should have been free, or at the very least, a $.99 book.
I haven't read this author before, but I hope this was his first book and he gets better. This one had repeated lines, left out words, and so much head-hopping, it was distracting. One point of view per scene, please! Some of the plotting didn't make sense. It's a small town and everybody is searching for the boy and later the girl, but nobody looks at the abandoned mine shack sometimes frequented by teenagers? That would be the first place they'd look. They'd have turned the town upside down. I found some of the emotional scenes overdone. Too much telling and not enough showing. The reader should feel the emotion without being told. That said, the storyline was goon, intricate, and shows a depth of imagination. I wish this writer well.
I was so impressed with this book. So many plot lines converging into one. It was never confusing and always surprising. I absolutely loved this book!! Five stars!!!
