Blood Will Tell The Gaian Consortium Series Book 1 eBook Christine Pope

I saw this book offered for free and took a chance on it even though it didn't have many reviews. I'm very glad I took the chance. I would describe the book as science fiction / action / romance book. There were some sex scenes that were over a page in length but nothing overly graphic. If you don't like some romance in your book, then you should avoid this. However, the vast majority of the book is science fiction / action.

The book opens on the planet of Iradia in the compound of a war-lord type of person called Mast. Within the opening chapter, Mast and everyone is dead with the exception of Mia and the mercenary Eryk Thorn. The first half of the book is about Mia and Eryk working to get Mast's treasure and defend the compound until they can leave. The second half of the book happens eight years later when Eryk and Mia meet up again to deal with bad people (I won't give any spoilers).

The first half of the book was extremely engaging and I couldn't put it down. The second half of the book dragged a bit in some places (once they were back on Nova Angeles) and somehow didn't hold my interest as well so I skipped around a little bit. However, overall it was a strong read and I would be happy to read something by this author again.

Blood Will Tell The Gaian Consortium Series Book 1 eBook Christine Pope Reviews

I'd say this is 2/3 thriller and 1/3 romance. I was fine with this combination. The author spins a wonderful page turning tale. I particularly enjoyed how she gave voice to minor characters - it really made the story that much richer. I agree that it would have been nice to have learned the H's POV or more interaction (other than mercenary action) between the H and h so that you understood more what she saw in him.

You can definitely read this book without having read the previous book. Pope really has a talent at sci-fi and I look forward to reading more in this series. So far, I've read the 3 Zhore books and highly recommend them.
This is the second book in this series but stands alone. First, the writing is well done with no grammar issues to jerk my mind out of the world created by Ms. Pope. I absolutely hate poor grammar by the way.
The story line moved smoothly with characters who were real and engaging. The romance between the mismatched lovers was told with sympathy mixed with excitement of stolen treasures, hacked bank accounts, and an eight year old with an uncanny ability to get himself in and out of trouble. If you like good science fiction and subtle romance this is an excellent book for you.
No matter if it is a fantasy world or a future/alien world, Christine Pope 's skillful world-building paints a masterful backdrop to her characters, who are equally well developed. I enjoyed the gradual development of attraction between the hero and heroine in this story. I dislike the usual instant attraction trope, "he took one look at her and knew he was to spend eternity at the side of this, his one true love." While the hero was a highly trained and ruthless mercenary, I liked very much that he was not the cookie-cutter six and a half foot tall Adonis, but rather he was described as rather average in height and appearance. To me, it lent to the credibility of the character. I also appreciated that the heroine was not a withering violet who threw herself at the hero's feet but rather, she was strong enough to walk away when she sensed her affection was unrequited. The plot was straight forward (it's not touted to be a mystery novel) and moved along at a good pace with enough action to keep me exited without the dizzying and seemingly endless battle scenes that plague some sci-fi novels. I am huge fan of Christine Pope 's writing and I especially have a tender spot for her Gaian Consortium series, all of which I have read. I wait anxiously for the two new novels in this series planned for release this Fall and Spring 2015.
Eryk Thorn and Miala Fels are unlike characters I have read in other science fiction romance novels and unlike Pope's other Gaian characters, Anika and Sarzhin. It is very refreshing when a science fiction author creates a new world and in a sequel creates new planets and completely new personalities. I am so tired of reading sequels that are written just like the original book, with even the same story arc, and all that is different are the physical descriptions of the main characters and a few of their little foibles. Although part of the Gaian Consortium series, this installment is so not that, and I will expect no less when I read The Gaia Gambit next.

Miala is intriguing. She is smart, brave, innocent, naïve and determined. And it is such a bad idea for Thorn to be attracted to her, but he can't seem to help himself. There are really two parts to this book, spanning several years. Miala changes quite a bit through the book, and we get inside her head a lot more frequently than inside Thorn's. I like that she starts out so young, but is never frivolous. Thorn remains an enigma through the first portion of the book. Pope does an outstanding job of revealing his backstory and his personality in snippets throughout the second half. I even like that he has a persona that is the real "him" but exaggerated. Thorn has many layers and each of them was fascinating.

Pope does a great job of creating interesting settings on different worlds. It feels like the future, but there are links to Earth civilization that make it relatable.

This was definitely a romance novel, and in fact, I'm used to reading things that are a little more explicit. It's a testament to Pope's skill that she can make an anticipated kiss as sexy as another author's detailed encounter. You definitely felt the heat between Miala and Thorn.

The secondary characters are also very good. I swear my nose wrinkled as I "smelled" Mast's quarters in his compound. The scenes with galactic cops Jessa and Creel were also very entertaining. The scene with them tied together provided great comic relief at just the right time. The pace of the book, and the introduction of action and levity at certain places in the plot, made everything feel like a really good TV series where new characters are introduced over the season with extensive story arcs. Loved this book.
