A Year and a Day Medieval DeWarenne Trilogy Virginia Henley 9780440222071 Books

The book started out at a good pace, but quickly drew to a snails pace and filled with so much history that it became hard to continue on. Midway into the novel, it picked back up and there was more romance and far less history. I do like how she had her characters as some actual true historical people. I don't like the fact that the author didn't let you know that Alicia was actually Alice. I thought the go between the two names were typos, but you find out half-way through, that Alice embellished her name. And then there is Robert Bruce. This book needs a better proofer (proof reader.) So many typos where Bruce or the Bruce's is Brace and the Brace's. One chapter had those kind of typos in almost every paragraph. That turned me off to this book and more-so to the author. Not sure if I'll read anything else by her. I actually wanted to give 3 stars based on those typos, but gave it 4 because the love story between Lynx and Jane is what every reader dreams of.

A Year and a Day Medieval DeWarenne Trilogy Virginia Henley 9780440222071 Books Reviews

This is an interesting story set in a period of history which I wasn't very familiar with. I did some research and found the history to be pretty accurate. The story started slowly but became more interesting as I got further into it. It did seem to end rather abruptly. Perhaps there will be a sequel....hope so.
As most oh Henleys the situations are historically accurate as to follow the storyline and her characters so full of life and realism they are shot. My big problem with the E-books is the transcription is sometimes really really sad. This particular plot revolved Robert Bruce of Scotland it's first king and he and family are repeatedly names as Braces. Come on really it distracts and calls to mind the efficiency of the rest of E book s that we pay for. Perhaps we should try paperback again the price is much the same but at least the text is correct. I emailed perhaps if more did we might get better quality in reading. As a whole I love the convenience and quality o products but with readers so popular I think this issue should be addressed. By the way JORYS story is great read on and ignore the oops.
I am not usually interested in Historical romances that include a lot of detailed historical data. Sue me, I like romances because I don't have to think too much, I can just enjoy the great story. That is why I love this one. She has the historical data that make her books very realistic but not so much that it makes the story drag. The story itself is really good. It's one I read over and over.
I read a blog where the author gave out some books she recommends for folks that loved Outlander. And this was one. NOPE! Not even close. I loved the historical aspect of it; adding in some 'real life' characters. And the story was ok, but I wasn't in love with it. I was looking for something I LOVE as much as Outlander. Outlander covers all the emotions. I normally don't spend anything on books as I get many from authors in exchange for a review. I now wish I hadn't paid for this one. However, it wasn't bad. Just not what I was hoping for or expecting. Had I not bought it with something in mind, I probably would have liked it more.
I love history special medieval era when Europe was starter to evolving in feudalism and the aristocracy started to evolve and Europe started to evolve in what is today. The problem with story is the confusion of names the Bruce and Breses. I was lost because I know Robert the Bruce was the king of Scotland. Wallace was killer by Edward plategen and the author missed after Wallace the scot risen and a fight that will go for years. The story between lyn an English and Jane a peasant is well developed and their love endure but I am emphasized in the revolt scot and England. This is the first book of the warrenne family, I will continue reading the series and I recommend this book to readers who love history and romance, it is historical tomsnce,
I LOVED this book! I read it for the first time many years ago and still have my original hardcover copy--which I purchased at Barnes and Noble for around $5. LOL In any event, over the years I've reread the book many times. I prefer to read on my nowadays; however, so I was very happy to see that a version had been released. I just finished reading the book for probably the umpteenth time, and I enjoyed it every bit as much as I did the first time I read it. The romance between Lynx and Jane is slow to start and progresses at a sedate, but steady pace. It is however, a very sweet romance and portrayed, IMO, in a very realistic way.

There is a lot of history--and I do mean a LOT--in the book, and although the romance remains the dominant plot throughout, it does at times take a back seat to the morass of political intrigue. The couple is separated many times throughout the story, while Lynx fulfills his duty to the King, fighting wars, extinguishing uprisings, and helping his uncle--who is named Governor of Scotland--to maintain order in the country. While they are apart, the story follows each protagonist, and while following Lynx this is when we hear a lot about war strategy, and the political goings on of Scotland during the relevant historical period. Furthermore, Lynx and Jane do not have their first encounter until page 67 of the book, and it's not until their next encounter--which occurs at page 80--that things really start to take off.

I usually prefer the romance novels I read to get right to the point. I prefer books where the h and H meet shortly after the story begins and then continue to progress at a steady pace. I also prefer stories where the H and h don't have to endure long periods of separation, or if they do, where that period is glossed over, instead of being highlighted. That being said, this book went against all those preferences, yet I still loved it. Go figure. Everything that occurs in the book was interesting to me; including the side romance between Marjory (Lynx's widowed sister) and Robert Bruce. Nonetheless, I have to confess that many times when I reread the book, I skipped over a lot of the political parts, although this last time I read my version from cover to cover.

Jane is the youngest of ten children. Her father, a half Norman, half Scot, is steward of the border castle Dumfries. Jane has the gift of healing and, to a lesser degree, the gift of second sight. Before she and Lynx actually meet, she dreams about him. The two finally meet when Lynx makes a visit to Dumfries, in the company of his good friend Robert Bruce. At that first meeting, Jane, usually a timid, shy creature, dumps soup all over Lynx, on purpose! LOL Lincoln de Warenne, a baron in his own right, and heir to an Earldom, wants nothing more in life than a son...if he can't have a son, he'll settle for a daughter. However, to his knowledge he has never impregnated a woman--including his late wife of five years--and he is concerned that the fault may lie with himself.

When Lincoln is appointed Overlord of Dumfries, and learns that his steward has ten children and 31 grandchildren, he devices a plan by which to obtain his heart's desire. He and Jock Leslie (Jane's father) agree to a handfasting between Jane and himself, for the purpose of producing a child. If Jane conceives, Lynx agrees to marry her--at this point he has no idea that Jane is the feisty Celt woman who doused him in soup! Jane has no desire to handfast with Lynx, but when her father gives her no other choice, she capitulates. From there the story progresses. Love between Lynx and Jane takes a while to develop and progresses slowly.

Lynx is overjoyed when Jane conceives, but she resents the fact that he cares nothing, and only cares for the child. When Lynx's mischievous sister, Majory (Jory) enters the picture and teaches Jane some of the finer points of being a lady, and more importantly, a woman, Lynx does not stand a chance! IMO, the love between Lynx and Jane is very realistically portrayed. All in all, this is a wonderful story of how two people, from two completely different backgrounds, stations in life, and enemy countries, overcome their differences to find a love that is all encompassing. The plot is chock full of excitement, what with political intrigue, betrayal, jealousy, and revenge. I loved it and highly recommend it.

FYI, this is absolutely NOT a clean romance. LOL Happy reading! Oh, a note regarding the version. I noticed a lot of errors, such as where Bruce is constantly misprinted as Brace, and where the format is wrong (like having more than one speaker in the same paragraph.) Though there are several errors, they did not in any way distract from my enjoyment of the story. Having read the print version many time, I know that this issue is restricted to the version. Thus, I did not take it into consideration when writing my review.
